Cities should be judged by freedom, democracy, and human flourishing. Our metrics should reflect human flourishing, the planet we share with animals and plants, and the ocean. Yet they do not. Even people who call themselves progressive judge a city’s health by property values, GDP, and housing starts.
Nothing makes me sadder than seeing people who are in their hearts progressive but lack the tools or knowledge to do more than repeat neoliberal talking points and Chicago School ideals.
This isn’t an accident; it is a crash.
